The San Diego Symphony Orchestra has emerged as one of the most exciting ensembles in the country under the leadership of Rafael Payare. The Dallas Symphony Orchestra closes the season in Palm Desert with a program that pairs Romantic intensity with Mahler’s luminous vision of heaven. At the podium is Fabio Luisi, one of today’s most refined and respected conductors, whose elegant leadership has brought the Dallas Symphony international recognition.
The evening begins with Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor, performed by Hélène Grimaud, a pianist renowned for the poetic depth and sensitivity of her interpretations. Schumann’s concerto remains one of the of the most beloved works for piano. The concert concludes with Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 in G major, a work that departs from the composer’s monumental canvases to embrace transparency, charm, and gentle humor. Scored with lighter orchestration and infused with folk-like melodies, the symphony culminates in a radiant final movement sung by soprano Sofia Fomina, depicting a child’s vision of heaven.
