International Day of Democracy 2026

The United Nations marks the International Day of Democracy on September 15, a global observance dedicated to strengthening democratic values, protecting human rights, and promoting inclusive participation worldwide. This year’s program at UN Headquarters highlights how deliberative democracy—bringing diverse voices directly into decision‑making—can deepen trust, improve governance, and ensure no one is left behind.

The featured event, “Raising Hands and Voices,” takes place from 1–2 pm in the Goals Lounge at UNHQ. Delegates, civil society leaders, and democracy experts will reflect on lessons from citizens’ assemblies around the world, exploring how participation, dialogue, and inclusion can create more responsive and accountable institutions. The program aligns with Secretary‑General António Guterres’ call to “bring together people from across societies to enrich decision making, foster trust, and build more peaceful, inclusive, and resilient societies.”

The observance also celebrates the 20‑year milestone of the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF), which has supported more than a thousand grassroots initiatives advancing civil society, independent media, gender equality, youth leadership, and democratic innovation. UNDEF’s work remains vital as communities confront disinformation, shrinking civic space, and rising threats to democratic norms.
