DESCRIPTION:This Saturday\, Juniper Arts in Joshua Tree will host a public event tied to the release of Glimpses of the Joshua Tree Dream\, Volume 2: Women of the Mojave. \n\n\n\nOn Saturday\, March 14 from 6–9 p.m.\, the gallery will present an exhibition and storytelling evening featuring photography from the new book alongside video interviews\, desert landscape footage\, and sound design. Author Lisa Schyck will also share stories behind the women featured in the project — artists\, entrepreneurs\, healers\, educators\, and community leaders living across the Hi-Desert. \n\n\n\nThe event offers the community an opportunity to experience the project in person and hear how the Mojave continues to shape the creative lives of the modern-day pioneers featured in the book. \n\n\n\nThe project includes women based in Joshua Tree and surrounding desert towns\, and a portion of proceeds from the sale of Glimpses of the Joshua Tree Dream (Volumes 1 & 2) will be donated back to support individuals and organizations throughout the High Desert.

DESCRIPTION:he Palm Springs Public Library\, Brothers of the Desert and Mizell Center have teamed up once again to present the second annual “Our Voices Our Stories: Celebrating Black Authors” a FREE community event in celebration of Black History Month on Sunday\, February 8th from 10 AM – 1:00 PM. \n\n\n\nThis event will begin with a welcome reception featuring a variety of bagels and spreads\, coffee\, and mimosas from 10-10:30 AM. The Best Bookstore in Palm Springs will be on hand with select books from our featured authors\, available for purchase.  At 10:30 AM the event will begin with our first featured author former NFL Player RK Russell in conversation with Lorenzo Taylor.  They will be discussing Russell’s Memoir “The Yards Between Us”\, an exploration of his journey as he shattered barriers and made history by becoming the first out active NFL player to identify as bisexual. On a day that is dedicated to the ultimate face-off in football\, the Superbowl\, Russell will talk about his career as a formidable defensive end when he played for the Dallas Cowboys and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers\, where he faced off against Hall of Famers and the fiercest competitors with unmatched skill and determination. With the mainstream popularity of the HBOMax series “Heated Rivalry” that has seemed to have resonated with audiences who aren’t part of the LGBTQ community\, transcending the stereotypes about pro athletes and the gay community\, Russell will share his own story and let you decide. \n\n\n\nFollowing RK Russell our second featured author will be Toni Ann Johnson in conversation with Marilyn F. Solomon. They will discuss her soon to be released book “But Where’s Home?” (to be released February 10\, 2026) which is a Novella and linked short story collection that lays bare the realities of Black life in America\, challenging readers to confront issues of racism\, classism\, colonized thinking\, narcissism\, abuse\, and parent-child relationships. Johnson’s complex and interwoven characters create a kaleidoscope of truths about human nature and the complicated relationship the United States has with race. They will touch on her career as a screenwriter\, playwright and author of other books including “Light Skin Gone to Waste”\, “Homecoming”\, and “Remedy for a Broken Angel”. \n\n\n\nFollowing their talk.at 12:45 PM attendees will have their final opportunity to purchase books and have them autographed by our authors. DESCRIPTION:Photographer Lisa McCord presents Rotan Switch\, a project that spans 43 years from1978 – 2021\, documenting life on her grandparents’ cotton farm in the Arkansas Delta\, following five generations of a community. \n\n\n\nRotan Switch takes its name from the community’s central landmark–the railroad switch where cotton was once loaded onto trains bound for the Delta. Although it has not been used in years\, it remains a potent symbol of the complex intersections of industry and agriculture\, racism and injustice. \n\n\n\nIn 1978\, McCord began a significant visual journey. This photographic collection transcendsbasic imagery\, exploring the intricate layers of community\, identity\, and the deep significance of home. The land of Arkansas and its inhabitants shape the core of the photographer’s sense of belonging. The images reveal a narrative intertwined with the socioeconomic realities of rural Southern America. This blend of personal memories and insights goes beyond mere documentation\, creating a vibrant account of Rotan’s story–interwoven with the photographer’s familial roots in a region marked by enduring historical disparities. \n\n\n\n“In a community in which most people spend their time working or caring for children\, my ability to observe and document in itself has been a position of privilege.” \n\n\n\n“These images are a record of my story of Rotan\, a story that is specific to my and my family’s role in a place where inequities exist to this day. I have done my best to acknowledge this complicated history.” \n\n\n\nMcCord\, a fine art and documentary photographer from the Arkansas Delta\, lives and worksbetween Palm Springs and Arkansas. Rotan Switch\, published in 2024 by Kehrer Verlag\, was a finalist for the Lucie Foundation Photo Book Awards and was a Critical Mass Top 50 finalist. SUMMARY:Pogrom: Kishinev and the Tilt of History / UCR Palm Desert Campus
DESCRIPTION:Steven J. Zipperstein will discuss his book Pogrom\, which tells the story of a riot that transformed the course of twentieth-century Jewish history. He will be joined in conversation by UCR Maimonides Chair of Jewish Studies Michael Alexander in presenting The Mark & Pamela Rubin Lecture in Hate\, Genocide\, and Ethnic Cleansing. \n\n\n\nOver several days in April of 1903\, 49 Jews were killed\, 600 were raped or wounded\, and more than 1\,000 Jewish-owned houses and stores were ransacked and destroyed during three days of violence in the town of Kishinev. So shattering were the aftereffects of this rampage\, that one historian remarked that it was “nothing less than a prototype for the Holocaust itself.” \n\n\n\nRecounted in lurid detail by newspapers throughout the Western world\, and covered sensationally by America’s Hearst press\, the pre-Easter attacks seized the imagination of an international public\, quickly becoming the prototype for what would become known as a “pogrom\,” and providing the impetus for efforts as varied as The Protocols of the Elders of Zion and the formation of the NAACP. Using new evidence culled from Russia\, Israel\, and Europe\, Zipperstein brings historical insight and clarity to a much-misunderstood event. \n\n\n\nSteven J. Zipperstein is the Daniel E. Koshland Professor in Jewish Culture and History at Stanford University. Their philanthropy is defined by both meaningful financial contributions and consistent personal engagement across the Coachella Valley. Barbara currently serves on the boards of Loving All Animals\, The Joslyn Center\, and The McCallum Theatre. Together\, they have provided long-term support to The Desert Symphony\, McCallum Theatre and The Muses\, CV Rep\, The Unforgettables Foundation\, The Desert Woman’s Show\, Loving All Animals\, Jewish Family Services\, and Old Town Artisan Studios. \n\n\n\nTheir impact extends well beyond sponsorship.
