DESCRIPTION:The City of Palm Springs Department of Parks & Recreation invites families to its annual Back-to-School Backpack Drive & Resource Fair on Saturday\, August 1\, from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Palm Springs Leisure Center (401 S. Pavilion Way). This free community event is designed to help local students and families prepare for a successful school year while connecting them with valuable community resources. \nTo help ensure a smooth and efficient experience\, all participants must register in advance and select a designated timeslot for attendance. \nEvery student who attends will receive: \n\nFree backpacks and school supplies\nAccess to Community Resource Fair & Activities\nComplimentary Palm Springs Swim Center day pass\nLimited free back-to-school haircuts (first come\, first served)\n\nVolunteers & Donations Needed \nVolunteer barbers and hairstylists are needed to provide free haircuts for students during the event. \nDonations needed: new backpacks and school supplies\, including notebooks\, pencils\, pens\, crayons\, markers\, folders\, binders\, calculators\, and other classroom essentials. \nDonation Drop-Off Locations: \n\nPalm Springs Leisure Center\, 401 S. DESCRIPTION:The desert sky puts on a spectacular show after sunset\, and the Astronomical Society of the Desert invites families to experience it up close during their twice‑monthly **Star Parties**. On **Saturday\, Aug. 8 from 8–10 pm**\, visitors can enjoy guided “sky tours\,” telescope and binocular viewing\, and expert insights into planets\, stars\, and other celestial wonders at the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument Visitor Center. The event is free\, wheelchair‑accessible\, and perfect for all ages (minors must attend with a guardian). A suggested $10 donation supports Friends of the Desert Mountains. If clouds roll in\, the party pauses — but on a clear night\, the desert sky is unforgettable.
