DESCRIPTION:A Queer Arcana: Art\, Magic\, and Spirit brings together an intergenerational group of artists who explore how magic\, spirituality\, and esoteric knowledge have shaped queer art and culture in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. \n\n\n\nDrawing on the meaning of arcana—hidden and mystical knowledge—the exhibition considers how queer artists have turned to obscure spiritual practices as sources of connection and transformation. These artists engage magic as a way to envision worlds beyond repressive systems\, reclaim sexuality as a sacred power\, and build community. \n\n\n\nThe works on view reflect a wide range of spiritual traditions and practices\, including Western occultism\, witchcraft and goddess worship\, Christian mysticism\, New Age beliefs influenced by Eastern philosophies\, and shamanic traditions rooted in Indigenous knowledge. Many artists explore and combine diverse traditions\, constructing through their work idiosyncratic and intricate worlds. \n\n\n\nAs articulated by the queer Chicana poet and theorist Gloria Anzaldúa\, “spirituality is a source of sustenance\, a way of knowing\, a path of survival.” A Queer Arcana highlights how magical and alternative spiritual practices have been ever-present within queer culture and LGBTQ+ struggles for liberation\, even when their significance has been obscured from dominant historical accounts. \n\n\n\nThe Palm Springs Art Museum main location is open Sunday\, Friday\, and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.\, and Thursday from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.. The museum is closed on Mondays\, Tuesdays\, and Wednesdays. Admission is free on Thursday evenings from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nExhibit runs March 28\, 2026 – October 18\, 2026

DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 15 [RESCHEDULED DATE from July 2 due to the Palm Springs Cultural Center’s kitchen fire.]\n6pm Bicentennial pre-show by Deserted Films\n6:30pm NASHVILLE (1975\, Robert Altman) \n“Y’all take it easy now. This isn’t Dallas\, it’s Nashville! They can’t do this to us here in Nashville!” \n24 main characters…two hours and thirty nine minutes…five days in 1975…so much red\, white\, and blue…and pretty much everything that was on America’s mind leading up to the bicentennial.  Altman’s film is a perfect summary statement for our series.  We love the award-winning song “I’m Easy” by Keith Carradine…and it’s just so much fun seeing almost everyone who was acting in the 1970s pass by the camera at some point!  Robert Altman\, man.  This will make you want a Summer-full of Altman. First played at the Camelot in August ’75!  \nCast includes (if you can believe it):\nLily Tomlin\, Ned Beatty\, Karen Black\, Ronee Blakley\, Keith Carradine\, Geraldine Chaplin\, Robert DoQui\, Shelley Duvall\, Henry Gibson\, Scott Glenn\, Jeff Goldblum\, Barbara Harris\, Michael Murphy\, Bert Remsen\, and many more!  \nWe had to reschedule this film from right before July 4th due to the late June fire at the Palm Springs Cultural Center…but people celebrated the Bicentennial from late 1975 through the end of 1976\, so we will too! Come early for a half-hour Bicentennial/1976-themed pre-show – it’s different every screening (there’ll be some Dolly!) Lots of fun stuff from our archives and from colleagues’ collections. Locals being locals. Home movies\, weird Bicentennial headlines\, and\, yeah\, a bit of history thrown in. We even have some ephemera from the film itself. \nABOUT THE SERIES\nWhere Were You in 1976?\nA look back at bicentennial cinema…\nThe USA turns 250 years old this year. It’s a BIG birthday! So we’ve put together a series that looks back at our last big birthday…the bicentennial of 1976. \nDeserted Films\, the Palm Springs Public Library\, and the Palm Springs Cultural Center have teamed up to bring you 5 (now six!) key films to get us thinking about where we were when we hit 200. \nDeserted Films will present a special pre-show (6-6:30) before each feature… and we’ve got some spectacular bicentennial-era home movies and other goodies to share! \nEnjoy the PSCC AC! Meet interesting people! See things you can’t see on TV or anywhere else!
